Share the Gift of Life
"Each of us can save as many as eight lives by donating organs," explains Sharon Ross, Lifesharing community outreach manager at UCSD Medical Center.

Whether you’re a millionaire or living paycheck to paycheck, you can give a priceless gift: life.
In many cases, age is not a barrier, she notes. Through a donated cornea, “An 80‐year‐old can give a whole lifetime of sight to an eight‐year‐old.”
In addition to donating organs such as kidneys, hearts and lungs, tissue donation can enhance the health and extend the longevity of grateful recipients. Some 3,700 people are added to the national organ waiting list every month; more than 116,000 Americans now anxiously await the kindness of strangers. Last year, 60 people in San Diego County alone died while waiting for an organ.

What prevents people from becoming an organ donor? It certainly cannot be the time or convenience factor; you can register quickly and easily when you renew your driver’s license with the DMV. In fact, you can register any time online at www.donatelifecalifornia.org or by phone at 866‐797‐2366.
When you register, you should inform family and friends so they can make sure your wishes are followed. You also might suggest that they learn more at www.organdonor.gov. Perhaps one reason that people are reluctant to sign up as an organ donor is that they do not wish to contemplate their demise. As a longtime hospice professional, I believe that being prepared for the inevitable is key to enjoying the life with which you have been gifted. And knowing you can share that gift adds immeasurably to all the days of your life.
