Cruise Through Carlsbad on a Pedego Electric Bike

The new business in Carlsbad Village opened eight weeks ago.

Electric bikes go up to 20 miles per hour, use a rechargable lithium ion battery, and pedal like a regular bike. Without any peddling it can go 30 miles before needing a charge, or 40 miles with peddling, said Pedego Carlsbad owner John Orndorff.

Orndorff bought an electric bike 10 months ago and instantly became hooked. "I live four miles inland and play volleyball on the beach. I was killing myself on my Townie [type of beach cruiser]," he said.

He opened Pedego Carlsbad eight weeks ago and he said the response has exceeded his expectations.

The electric bikes are very quiet, riders must be over age 16 and all riders are required by law to wear a helmet. Helmets and locks are included in the rental price. Rentals start at $14 an hour. Pedego also rents pedal bikes for $7 and hour.

The store sells the bikes too, an electric bike runs around $1,900.

In addition, riders can sign up for tours including a trip to the Self Realization Gardens, an Oceanside Pier & Harbor Tour or a Couple's Romantic Picnic which includes water and deli sandwiches to put in the bike's basket.
