CASTRO VALLEY, CA — 44 drivers in Castro Valley received tickets Wednesday morning as the California Highway Patrol cracked down on pedestrian safety. All of the tickets were written in a four hour period.

In addition, one vehicle was impounded.

The CHP reminds drivers of the law, "Per California Vehicle Code 21950(a): The driver of a vehicle shall yield the right-of-way to a pedestrian crossing the roadway within any marked crosswalk or within any unmarked crosswalk at an intersection."

The pedestrian operation was held on Redwood Road and involved a pedestrian crossing the street in a marked crosswalk. CHP officers would then chase down and ticket violators.

"Please be careful and pay attention to the roadway, whether you are a pedestrian or driver. Our goal is to prevent another tragedy similar to the fatal car crash involving a child pedestrian walking in a crosswalk a few years ago."

The CHP pedestrian operation was an approved National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) enforcement detail.
