From California Highway Patrol
On Tuesday May 21, 2013, The California Highway Patrol (CHP) Castro Valley Area graduated 16 Senior Volunteers.
These volunteers will assist with filing, data entry, answering phones and greeting citizens. The volunteers will also assist by transporting CHP vehicles, deploying the radar trailer and assisting officers at public events, safety presentations, and ride-a-longs.
Commander, Lieutenant Christopher Sherry issued the following statement: “The CHP’s mission is to provide the highest level of safety, service, and security to the public. We are an organization that provides indispensable services to our community. In order to accomplish this level of service, we will utilize these outstanding citizens. Senior volunteer efforts free up both uniformed and non-uniformed members of the Department to concentrate on their core duties. I am so excited to work with this diverse group of caring citizens to save lives and improve departmental efficiency. ”
The objectives of the CHP’s Senior Volunteer Program are to provide enhanced public service to the community; Provide an opportunity for senior citizens to make a definitive contribution toward improving public safety and service; Instill among participating volunteers an understanding and appreciation of the justice system, human relations, and ethics in the field of law enforcement.
The graduates include a Word War II Veteran and a mother of CHP Officer. The graduates are: Henry Butcher, Donna DeLorme, Patrick, Doohan, John DuFrane, Wendy Ellioff, Gary Frybarger, Joan King, Ted Kuntz, Marsha Nishikawa, Celeste Perry, Karen Plummer, Bud Poe, Sally Roberts, Dottie Russell, Richard Williamson, and Robert Whitney.
Following the Pledge of Allegiance, Commander Christopher Sherry welcomed guests and introduced Assistant Chief Sherrell Sutherland who provided congratulatory remarks to the graduates.
