Castro Valley High School Students Recognized In Outdoor Arts Contest

Two Castro Valley High School students are being celebrated for their success in the Pat Vachini Outdoor Writing and Photography Contest.

CASTRO VALLEY, CA—Jennifer Mi and Drew Paxman are among the winners of the third annual Pat Vachini Outdoor Writing and Photography Contest, which saw entries more than double this year.

The contest is named in honor of Patricia Vachini: the late wife of Don Vachini, one of California’s foremost outdoor writers and photographers. The prestigious scholarship contest is sponsored by OWAC, a non-profit organization of media professionals who communicate through their work the outdoor opportunities and issues in the region.

Mi received second place for her portfolio of photos submitted in the Scenic Photography images category.

The judging panel commended her use of spatial balance and framing. One judge noted that Mi's "'Ventures with Sister' photo created a very serene and inviting image … it makes one want to be there."

Paxman, who received third place (tie) in the Flora and Fauna Photography category, was praised for his expression of “great lighting, balanced composition and crisp focus,” as well as use of color and contrast.

The contest is authored and administered by Peter Schroeder. Its judges are industry professionals who extolled contestants for content, originality and proficiency. Submissions were free, and winners received cash prizes.

According to a press release from OWAC, the organization was founded in 1986 to offer media professionals support, collaboration, craft improvement and networking opportunities. OWAC seeks to encourage and support America’s youth in pursuing these career avenues.

This year’s contest was open to area High School Juniors and Seniors. OWAC solicited
written submissions of 500 words or more on outdoor subjects in a variety of formats
including essay, news article, personal experience, documentary, blog and research
