Teen And Sheriff’s Dispatcher Honored for Heroism
The pair were recognized for their lifesaving actions during a home invasion.

CASTRO VALLEY, CA — A Castro Valley teenager and an Alameda County Sheriff’s Office dispatcher were honored recently for their bravery and professionalism during a 2020 home invasion robbery that unfolded when the teen was just 11 years old.
Aaron Nguyen, now 16, and Emergency Services Dispatcher II/Communications Training Officer Lucia Guzman were recognized on April 24 at a special awards ceremony celebrating extraordinary 911 calls. The event, hosted by “911 For Kids,” also included honors from the California State Assembly, State Senate, and a presentation by actress and philanthropist Kathy Ireland.

In April 2020, Nguyen showed remarkable calm and quick thinking as he called 911 during the robbery. His detailed descriptions, including information about the suspect’s firearm, played a pivotal role in the investigation, officials said.
Nguyen credited his ability to identify the firearm to his familiarity with video games like “Call of Duty,” a skill that proved unexpectedly valuable in a real-life crisis.

Guzman, who handled the emergency call and guided Nguyen during the tense situation, also received recognition for her professionalism and critical support.
“This honor may have been delayed due to the pandemic, but certainly not denied,” the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement. “We are proud of both Aaron and CTO Guzman for their courage, skill, and teamwork.”
ACSO Capt. Jeremy Hamman and ESD Supervisor Gregory Bernardi, who nominated Guzman, attended the ceremony to celebrate the honorees’ achievements.
