Castro Valley Sanitary District (CVSan) is pleased to announce that Angel Chen and Christina Huang are the winners of the 2024/25 CVSan Environmental Leader Scholarship! These students from Castro Valley High School (CVHS) will each receive a $1,000 scholarship award and were recognized at CVSan’s Board of Directors meeting on May 6, 2025.

Our first scholarship recipient is Angel Chen, a former Earth Team Intern and the current President of the Castro Valley High School (CVHS) Smart Environment Club. As an Earth Team Intern, Angel participated in hands-on, service-learning projects focused on improving the environment by educating community members about proper waste sorting, and received the President’s Environmental Youth Award Certificate of Participation for her work. Through the Smart Environment Club, Angel organized a school-wide sustainability fair featuring 18 organizations, reaching nearly 1,300 students. Over the past few years, she has participated in numerous CVSan events, including Earth Day Clean-Up, Gleaning, and Zero Waste Week. Angel plans to study Earth Systems and Environmental Science at UC Irvine later this year. We would like to congratulate Angel Chen as a CVSan Scholarship Award winner!

Our second scholarship recipient is Christina Huang, a former CVSan Community Advisory Committee (CAC) Member and a current member of the ForestR Litter Clean-Up Crew. Christina has participated in several CVSan Earth Day Clean-Up events, volunteered with NASA as a SEES intern conducting Earth science research, served as a Climate Fellow with Rustic Pathways where she proposed a community-based climate project, and interned with East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) focusing on water rights. Christina plans to study Civil and Environmental Engineering at UC Berkeley later this year. We would like to congratulate Christina Huang as a CVSan Scholarship Award winner!
