CVSan: Castro Valley’s First 1 lb. Refillable Propane Retailers

Castro Valley Sanitary District (CVSan) has recruited Castro Valley Sportsmen’s Center (3794 Castro Valley Blvd.) and Pete’s ACE Hardware (2569 Castro Valley Blvd.) as the first local retailers to carry refillable 1 lb. propane cylinders for purchase and exchange!

An estimated 40 million single-use 1 lb. propane cylinders are purchased every year, with over 4 million in California alone. Currently, most single-use cylinders end up in the landfill and even when they are ‘empty’, they often still contain a small amount of gas. This poses a significant danger to workers due to the risk of explosions and fires, and makes them costly to dispose of. Refillable propane cylinders are a sustainable alternative that protects our environment, communities, and saves consumers money.

CVSan’s Zero Waste Supervisor, Naomi Lue, stated “Refillable 1 lb. cylinders help us reduce single-use waste, are environmentally conscious, and promote a circular economy. We are pleased to announce that Castro Valley Sportsmen’s Center and Pete’s ACE Hardware have partnered with us to offer this product and promote sustainable recreation locally.”
