HAYWARD, CA -- Flags were flown half-staff on Tuesday as California mourned the loss of Officer Andrew Camilleri. Camilleri was killed on Christmas Eve after he and his partner were struck by a car of someone suspected of driving under the influence.
California Highway Patrol officials said the incident happened at 11:30 p.m. on Dec. 24 on southbound Interstate 880 at the Winton on-ramp.
"An errant driver drifted off the road from I-880 and struck the right rear of the patrol vehicle. Both officers suffered injuries in the collision and were transported to the hospital where tragically, Officer Camilleri was pronounced deceased," officials said on Facebook.
