ALAMEDA COUNTY, CA — As temperatures again heat up in the East Bay, increasing the chance of wildfires, the Alameda County Sheriff's Office has unveiled a new livestock housing area at the East County Animal Shelter in Dublin.

The shelter will serve as an emergency evacuation center for horses, goats, pigs, and more.

A ribbon cutting ceremony with Sheriff Yesenia Sanchez and Jennifer Wills, Animal Services Supervisor, was held on Friday, June 28.

"This expansion marks a pivotal advancement for our shelter, and we are enthusiastic about sharing this significant milestone," the sheriff's office said in a statement. "Wildfires pose substantial challenges for animal rescues and safe storage. This livestock expansion is essential because it allows us to shelter horses, goats, pigs, and more. These corrals will serve as indispensable havens for large animals during emergencies, ensuring their safety and well-being during critical times of crisis, a cause we all deeply care about.

The Shelter staff, Office of Emergency Services personnel, and Alameda County Sheriff's Mounted Posse members all received credit for the milestone.
