Culver City Names Its First Black Mayor

CULVER CITY, CA — Culver City has named the city's first Black Mayor this week.

Dr. Daniel Lee will serve as Culver City's next mayor, part of the council's reorganization.

"I look forward to serving as Culver City's first Black Mayor for the next year and continuing this Council's focus on addressing the housing crisis, protecting the health and safety of our residents and stakeholders, while lowering our greenhouse gas emissions and promoting active transportation that gets people out of their cars and into local businesses," Lee said in a statement.

In 2018, Lee was elected the first Black member of the Culver City Council in the city's more than 100-year history.

He is a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and California Air National Guard, he currently works as Project Director at the James Lawson Institute, according to his website. He earned a Master’s Degree in Social Welfare from UCLA and is a doctoral candidate at USC. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for Move to Amend, the Backbone Campaign, Mockingbird Incubator and the Clean Power Alliance.

The City Council of the City of Culver City announced its reorganization Monday night during its regular meeting. The following changes were announced:

• Daniel Lee, Ph.D., Mayor
• Albert Vera, Vice Mayor
• Göran Eriksson, Council Member
• Alex Fisch, Council Member
• Yasmine-Imani McMorrin, Council Member
