Growing year-round, perennial rhubarb in Southern California

Luther Burbank did it and you can too

For the past 5 years, the WLA chapter of the California Rare Fruit Growers has been running a Rhubarb Project: our mission, to return perennial, year-round rhubarb to our backyards. If you love rhubarb, you have probably been frustrated by the plants usually available at local nurseries which can grow well for a year or so and then sputter out. And yet one hundred years ago, rhubarb was a hugely successful ongoing crop for Southern California farmers. Why couldn't we do it now?

You can read about the genesis of our project here. And last year's follow-up here where we said we were no longer starting seeds. But this past winter, urged on by popular interest, we decide to get back into harness. Right now we have about 100 plants of four different varieties. They are healthy, organic and ready to go into your gardens. Read about them here. Or if you just want to cut to the chase and buy a couple, the plants are here.
