Danville Building 'Very Hungry Caterpillar' Bench; Artists Invited To Submit Designs

A fiberglass bench with artwork from the famous Eric Carle book will sit outside the Danville Library near the Town Green.

DANVILLE, CA — Bay Area artists are invited to submit designs for a fiberglass book bench located on the Town Green outside the Danville Library.

The bench will be inspired by the famous 1969 Eric Carle children's book "The Very Hungry Caterpillar."

Artists 16 and older who reside in a Bay Area county are encouraged to submit original designs by Oct. 17.

The winning book was selected as part of public. vote as pat of the Book Bench Challenge. Staff from the town and the library suggested a total of eight books, and "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" received the most out of 300 votes. Maurice Sendak's "Where the Wild Things Are" received the second highest number of votes.

In past years, Danville launched two temporary Book Bench Challenges that placed book benches all across the town. The benches were sold at auction, and the funds went toward future public art projects in the town.
