District Moves To Terminate Middle School Construction Contract

The school district had considered ending the contract with the company in June.

DANVILLE, CA — The San Ramon Valley Unified School District has moved to sever ties with one of the main contractors in a Alamo middle school construction project that has been plagued by problems. The district announced Friday that it "has taken steps to terminate the contract with Vila Construction" for a classroom and multi-purpose room project at Stone Valley Middle School.

The school district had considered ending the contract with Vila in June, but held off after the Richmond firm's CEO publicly apologized for cost overruns and delays at a board meeting and committed to working with the district to fix the problems.

In a Friday post on its website, the district said that despite these efforts, "staff remains concerned about several key issues, including ongoing concerns with meeting the schedule, a reduction of personnel dedicated to the project, and quality control. Given the continuing issues, the SRVUSD team has taken steps to terminate the contract with Vila Construction.

"While there will be a temporary stop in construction, we expect that the Stone Valley Middle School project will resume progress and return to its schedule in a timely and efficient manner."

The district said it would support the surety company, Liberty Mutual, and current subcontractors in getting the project back on track.
