DANVILLE, CA — Tuesday is Election Day for the California primary when voters will decide key races in the Tri-Valley and at the state level.

The first result numbers should be available shortly after 8 p.m., according to the county elections division.

Arguably one of the biggest local races is for Contra Costa Sheriff/Coroner. Incumbent David Livingston is running to hold his spot against Benjamin Therriault. Livingston was elected as the 22nd sheriff of Contra Costa County in June of 2010.

County superintendent of schools Lynn Mackey is the only person on the ballot for her seat.

In local races such as sheriff, DA and superintendent of county schools, candidates need a 50 percent plus 1 majority to win. If no candidate gets 50 percent plus 1, the top two have a runoff in November. This means local races could see winners on Election Day.

In federal and state races, the top two candidates go on to the November election.
