2 Suspects Chop Down 8 Dublin High School Trees With Chainsaws: Police

Police said video surveillance shows two suspects entering through an unsecured gate and using chainsaws to cut down the trees.

DUBLIN, CA — Two individuals cut down eight trees with chainsaws on the Dublin High School campus Wednesday night following the school's 5th annual Tree Lighting, according to the school and police. Dublin police are investigating, and the vandals remain at-large.

Photos provided by the school show that the trunks of trees were all cut off near the base.

According to Dublin Police Services Captain Miguel Campos, surveillance footage shows two suspects entering the school through the unsecured south side gate around 12:15 a.m. Thursday and cutting down eight trees with an electric chainsaw and other tools.

The suspects then left DHS at around 1:15 a.m., and traveled east on Brighton Drive toward Amador Valley Boulevard, Campos said.

"It is difficult to fully express the level of dismay we feel," DHS Principal Maureen Byrne said in a statement. "We are shocked, saddened, and deeply frustrated. These trees were part of our campus environment, planted and cared for to create a welcoming, vibrant place for our students to learn and grow. To see them destroyed so deliberately has been heartbreaking. We are struggling to understand why anyone would do something like this. The incident has left many of us questioning the motivations behind such destructive behavior."
