8K+ Hands-Free Citations Issued By CHP In April
That's up more than 5,000 from tickets in January.

DUBLIN, CA — California Highway Patrol shared information on citations made during National Distracted Driving Awareness Month in April.
CHP said they issued 8,795 citations to drivers for violating the state's hands-free law with the goal of reducing the number of distracted drivers.
In California, it's illegal to hold a cell phone or similar device in your hand while driving. Phones can be used hands-free on a speaker or by voice command.

The law was initially aimed at younger generations, ages 16 to 24, according to the California Office of Traffic Safety.
