County Supervisor Sued by Former Chief of Staff

Alameda County Supervisor Scott Haggerty is being sued by his former chief of staff.

Chris Gray, Haggerty’s former aide, filed a lawsuit Friday accusing Haggerty of using his position to line his pockets with public money, according to the Oakland Tribune. Gray says he was fired when he tried to get in the way.

Haggerty has represented Alameda County District 1 since 1997. The district includes Livermore, Dublin and most of Fremont.

Gray was a longtime employee, having worked 27 years in the District 1 office — including 15 years with Haggerty — until he was fired in June.

According to the Tribune, Gray’s termination was related to his work performance.

Gray, 56, argues that Haggerty was trying to push him out because of his age, poor health condition, and because Gray had complained about Haggerty using his public office for personal gains, the Tribune reports.

Gray also accused Haggerty of using his office staff to work on re-election campaigns and personal errands for him, including chauffeuring Haggerty’s children and tending to his pets.

Haggerty’s office, however, dismissed the claims, telling the Tribune that the accusations are a case of “a disgruntled employee trying to get a payoff.”
