Bay Area City To Conduct DUI Checkpoint
The checkpoint aims to remove impaired drivers from the road and promote traffic safety, police say.

FREMONT, CA — The Fremont Police Department will conduct a DUI checkpoint on May 15 in the central part of the city, officials announced.
The checkpoint will run from 7 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. and is part of an ongoing effort to reduce impaired driving and improve road safety, police said.
Checkpoint locations are selected based on data identifying areas with higher rates of DUI-related crashes and arrests. The department said the primary goal is to promote public safety by removing impaired drivers from the road.
“Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk,” Lt. Mahboobi said in a statement. “Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improve traffic safety.”
Police reminded drivers that impairment is not limited to alcohol. Certain prescription and over-the-counter medications can interfere with driving ability, and while marijuana is legal in California for medical and recreational use, driving under the influence of marijuana remains illegal.
A first-time DUI conviction can result in fines and penalties averaging $13,500, along with a suspended driver’s license, police noted.
Funding for the checkpoint comes from a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead for a safe ride home and to avoid driving under the influence.
