My First Marathon: What It Taught Me

Revant Kasichainula

In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, when the world came to a screeching halt, many of us found ourselves searching for ways to stay active, maintain our sanity, and challenge our limits. It was like a person moving to a new city and having to learn their way around, discovering new opportunities and meeting new people along the way. For me, that search led to the world of running and the incredible journey of training for and completing my first full marathon. I want to share my personal marathon story – a journey that began in 2020 and how I evolved from a novice runner to completing 26.2 miles and what it taught me.

2020 was a year like no other. As the pandemic swept across the globe, lockdowns and restrictions disrupted our daily lives. In a matter of months, life as we knew it had changed. As John F. Kennedy once said: “Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future.” For me, the abrupt halt to my regular sports training hit me hardest. Staying at home for extended periods was challenging for both my physical and mental well-being. To stay positive during such a difficult period, I had to change my attitude towards the situation and accept the changes that come with it. I had to remember that these changes were temporary and that there would be a light at the end of the tunnel. Frustration was building up, and I knew I needed an outlet.

With limited options for exercise, I decided to give running a try. It was something I had never seriously pursued before, but I figured that it was an activity I could do alone and safely in uncertain times. I laced up my old sneakers, unfolded the decades-old treadmill sitting in my garage, and went for my first few runs.

The initial days were tough. My lungs burned, my legs ached, and every step was a forced effort. But despite the discomfort, there was a strange sense of satisfaction that came from pushing myself beyond my comfort zone. With my headphones, a fitness watch, and my running shoes, I continued to run every single day. I soon found myself lost in the rhythmic pattern of my steps, the freeing feeling of running without a care in the world. From exercise to passion and from passion to obsession.

Early this year, I decided to set a goal for myself: to run a half marathon. The thought of covering 13.1 miles on foot was both exciting and intimidating. I threw myself into a structured training plan, gradually increasing my mileage each week. The support of online running communities and virtual races added a sense of camaraderie to my solo endeavors.

Race day finally arrived, and I laced up my running shoes with a mix of excitement and nerves. The adrenaline coursing through my veins propelled me forward, and with each step, I felt a sense of accomplishment that was hard to put into words. Crossing the half marathon finish line was a moment of triumph, but it was only the beginning of my journey.

With the taste of success still fresh, I set my sights on an even loftier goal – the full marathon. Training for a marathon is a grueling process that tests not only your physical endurance but also your mental fortitude. It requires dedication, discipline, and a willingness to push through the pain.

My training plan for the full marathon was more rigorous, with longer runs and increased weekly mileage. I learned about nutrition, hydration, and the importance of rest and recovery. My motivation waned on days when school work was unforgiving, but I persevered.

Months of training led to the moment I had been eagerly awaiting – marathon race day. The air was filled with a mix of excitement and nervous energy as I joined hundreds of fellow runners at the starting line. The journey that began in isolation had brought me to this point, surrounded by a community of like-minded individuals.

The marathon was a true test of my limits. It was physically grueling, mentally demanding, and emotionally charged. There were moments when doubt crept in, but I reminded myself of the countless hours of training and the determination that had brought me here. With each step, I drew strength from the knowledge that I was not alone in this endeavor.

Crossing the finish line of my first marathon was an indescribable feeling. The sense of achievement was overwhelming, and tears of joy mingled with the sweat on my face. It was a reminder that, even in the face of adversity, we can push ourselves beyond our perceived limits and achieve remarkable feats.

My marathon journey began as a response to the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. It was a way to stay in shape and blow off steam, but it became much more than that. It was a journey of resilience, determination, and self-discovery. Even in the darkest of times, we can find opportunities for growth and transformation.

Running a marathon is not just about covering 26.2 miles; it's about pushing past your own boundaries, embracing discomfort, and realizing your full potential. So, if you ever find yourself facing adversity or searching for a new challenge, consider lacing up your running shoes and embarking on your own marathon journey. Maybe you'll discover a strength within yourself that you didn't know existed.
