📰 News we're reading

• Fremont Man Who Fatally Stabbed Suspected Neo-Nazi Associate Takes Plea Deal: Report (patch.com) — Fremont residents are learning that local man Eddie Moses has received a 12-year state prison sentence after taking a plea deal in a deadly 2023 confrontation near a gas station on Paseo Padre Parkway. Prosecutors say Moses pleaded no contest to voluntary manslaughter after fatally stabbing Mario Molinari, a man with a violent record and alleged Aryan Brotherhood ties, following a knife attack that left Moses’ throat slashed.

• Cities can't punish outreach workers for helping homeless Californians under new law (signalscv.com) — A new California law now blocks cities from penalizing outreach workers who provide food, shelter materials, or legal and medical help to people in homeless encampments, a change sparked partly by Fremont’s brief 2025 crackdown on encampment “aiders.” For Fremont residents, it means local or faith-based volunteers can keep helping unhoused neighbors without fear of misdemeanor charges, even as cities retain broad powers to police camping itself.

• These California cities just raised minimum wages. Where can workers earn more? (sacbee.com) — Fremont workers just saw their local minimum wage set at $17.75 an hour, above California’s new statewide floor of $16.90 that took effect January 1. The piece also compares Fremont’s rate with dozens of other Bay Area and Southern California cities, and explains special higher minimums for fast food and many health care workers across the state.
