FREMONT, CA — An armed carjacking suspect who was shot by a Fremont Police officer has been identified as Sean Patrick McMahan, 31, of Fremont, according to police. The suspect is hospitalized in stable condition.

The officer who shot McMahan has been identified as patrol officer Jonathan Laforteza.

The shooting happened Sunday morning on Automall Parkway. The confrontation happened after McMahan allegedly tried to carjack a victim in the parking lot of a store in the 44000 block of Osgood Road.

Police were notified about the carjacking attempt at around 9 a.m. The suspect was armed with a knife and left the scene prior to officers’ arrival, police report.

"A short time later, an officer located a male subject nearby who matched the description of the carjacking suspect," the police department said in a statement about the case. "The suspect was still armed with a knife and walking on Automall Parkway just west of Osgood Rd.

"The officer directed the suspect to stop. The suspect brandished the knife at the officer and advanced toward him. Despite numerous commands to stop, and the officer repositioning to create space and distance, the suspect continued to advance toward the officer while holding the knife.

"The officer discharged his service weapon, striking the suspect once. Officers on scene rendered medical aid to the suspect, who was subsequently transported to an area hospital."
