At $1 Mill Strong, Gilroy To Play Golf, Eat Pizza At Fundraisers

The victim support from the Garlic Festival shooting has come from as far away as Africa and Sweden and helped the foundation surpass $1M.

GILROY, CA — Mounting to the multitude of love and support that has traveled as far away as Africa and tipped the foundation to the $1 million mark, Pieology Pizzeria and Rosewood CordeValle Golf are throwing fundraisers for the victims and families impacted by the Gilroy Garlic Festival mass shooting July 28. They're scheduled for Aug. 27 and Sept. 3, respectively.

All sale receipt proceeds from Pieology for next Tuesday's event "will go directly to those most impacted by the horrific violence," pizzeria owner James Yeung said. "We are a small, very close community, and we have been devastated by what happened. Everyone wants to help however they can."

Pieology Pizzeria is located at 6955 Camino Arroyo and will be open with a full menu at 11 a.m. the next day. Information may be found by visiting the website.

About a week later, CordeValle is staging a golf tournament at noon with a barbecue lunch and refreshments at $175 per player. The goal is to get 80 players, and the resort is about halfway there. Players may sign up at this site.

"We wanted to give back to the community. It's brought this community closer together," CordeValle Director of Sales Marline Avelar told Patch.

The resort has upped the ante by taking sponsorships for $1,000 on each hole. All the proceeds are earmarked for the shooting victims through the Gilroy Foundation.

"More and more businesses are doing this," Gilroy Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Mark Turner told Patch.

The Gilroy Garlic Festival Victims Relief Fund donations surpassed the $1 million mark last week and now stands at $1.1 million, foundation spokeswoman Donna Pray told Patch Friday.

"You know, we expected this from Gilroy, but we've had donations from all over the world," she said, admitting to being overwhelmed by the outpouring.
