$3.9M Grant Awarded For Gilroy Garlic Festival Shooting Victims

The grant will fund the Gilroy Strong Resiliency Center that opened in January 2020, according to a news release.

GILROY, CA — A $3.9 million grant in federal funds was awarded to assist victims of the 2019 Gilroy Garlic Festival shooting, the California Victim Compensation Board announced last week.

The grant, from the U.S. Department of Justice Office for Victims of Crime Antiterrorism and Emergency Assistance Program, will fund the Gilroy Strong Resiliency Center that opened in January 2020, according to a news release. It will also help fund counseling services for victims and first responders.

Three people were killed and 17 were injured in the July 2019 shooting.

“We are very grateful for OVC’s support to provide long-term assistance for the victims of this tragic event,” said California Victim Compensation Board Executive Officer Lynda Gledhill. “This grant ensures that all the victims of this shooting and their families receive the help they need.”

The funding runs through Oct. 2022. As of September, more than 600 victims and family members had filed claims, and more than $247,000 had been awarded.

Victims have until 2026 to file claims with the California Victim Compensation Board.
