Benchmark for Recovery, Sales Tax, Shows Positive in Gilroy

A recently released report shows Gilroy surpassing the state average in sales tax income.

Gilroy’s local economy beat the state average for sales tax growth compared with this time last year, an important indicator of economic recovery, according to a new report from the city.

From April through June, Gilroy experienced a 10.1 percent growth, compared with 8.6 for Northern California and 6.9 for Southern California, according to the report.

City officials said that the growth, while slower than many would hope for, is expected to continue, along with a generally stronger recovery trend in the Silicon Valley's economy.
