Discussions Set To Continue Between Gilroy, Sharks Over Ice Rink
The proposed 100,000 square foot facility would consist of two ice rinks, with the possibility of a swimming or recreational facility.
GILROY, CA — The city of Gilroy and the San Jose Sharks were expected to continue an exclusivity agreement for discussions on a potential ice rink at the Gilroy Sports Park.
The proposed 100,000 square foot facility would consist of two ice rinks, with the possibility of a swimming or recreational facility, according to the city. The Gilroy City Council was set to extend the exclusivity period to continue discussions during Monday’s meeting.
The Gilroy Dispatch reported last year that the facility also include a restaurant, with an estimated cost of $40 million.

“Both the City and Sharks have already allocated resources towards a potential facility agreement,” city staff wrote in a report. “Further talks would enable the City and Sharks to finalize a potential project, identify financing and determine the ongoing operational relationship.”
A potential final agreement would have to be approved by the council. The current exclusivity agreement, a period of time in which neither side will explore a similar deal with other parties, runs through July.

“Approval of extending the exclusivity agreement (one additional year) would give both parties the opportunity to conduct additional due diligence,” city staff wrote. “During this time staff would continue to take a close look at the details of the proposal and determine if it is advantageous for the community, or not, and how best to proceed.”
