Fake News Topic Of Media Researcher At Gilroy Library Talk

Researcher John McManus will explain the difference between fake news sources and credible outlets in his talk set for Oct. 13 at 10:30 a.m.

GILROY, CA -- The library will be front and center of the truth when media researcher John McManus provides a talk to distinguish between artificial information passed off as news and articles from credible news organizations.

In coordination with Literacy Awareness Month, his talk titled "Don't be fooled: A citizen's guide to news and information in the digital age" scheduled Oct. 13 from 10:30 a.m. to noon. The library is located at 350 W. Sixth St. in Gilroy.

McManus founded www.gradethenews.org while at Stanford University in Palo Alto, a website billed as a measuring stick for San Francisco Bay Area news. The project, which ran for seven years with funding from the Knight, Ford and Gerbode foundations, was designed in response to the latest term in the American vernacular.

His work has appeared in the Columbia Journalism Review among other academic journals.

The event is co-sponsored by the Gilroy chapter of the American Association of University Women.
