IRS Phone Scam Hitting Morgan Hill, Police Warn

The Morgan Hill Police Department is issuing an alert to residents callers asking for back taxes owed to the IRS are illegitimate.

MORGAN HILL, CA -- Police want city residents to proceed with caution if they receive a phone call stating that they owe unpaid taxes to the Internal Revenue Service.

The caller will request payment in gift cards.

"Trust us, the IRS does not want to be paid in gift cards. Don't fall for this scam," read a Morgan Hill tweet.

If you receive a call, ask for a phone number to call back on and the employee badge number. If the caller doesn't provide it, you may report the incident to the federal Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 800-366-4484.

If you think you owe back taxes, you may call the IRS at 800-829-1040.
