MORGAN HILL, CA — Morgan Hill police on Tuesday released more details about what led to an officer shooting and injuring a man inside a Safeway store last week.
Shaun Hillman, a 40-year-old man from Van Nuys in Southern California, allegedly carried a knife and wine bottle around the store at 840 E. Dunne Ave. after police responded early Friday morning to a report of a disturbance there.
Officers asked Hillman multiple times to drop the knife but he refused and ran around the store, prompting police to order the evacuation of the building. Officers encountered a victim who they determined had been struck in the head with a wine bottle by Hillman, police said.

After several minutes of officers attempting de-escalation techniques, Hillman allegedly charged toward them and threw multiple wine bottles at them, prompting an officer to discharge their firearm at him. He continued advancing and an officer shot him, according to police.
Hillman continued resisting but was subdued by multiple officers and was taken to a hospital in stable condition. The victim hit with a wine bottle was also taken to the hospital, and police said no officers were hurt. The name of the officer who shot Hillman has not been released.
