Problem Spots Made Gilroy, Los Gatos, San Jose Driving Bad

Flooding, fire, crashes -- south Santa Clara County motorists negotiated many traffic hazards, among them on Cottle Road, SR-85 and I-680.

GILROY, CA -- A fire on Interstate 680 broke out and was extinguished at the East Capitol Expressway connection - but not before blocking the right shoulder and piling onto a super traffic nightmare in the South Bay following the Super Bowl, the California Highway Patrol reported.

Delays was the catch word of the day.

An emergency guardrail repair coupled with roadway flooding added to a list of traffic problems plaguing south Santa Clara County driving Monday, the CHP reported.

For starters, Cottle Road was closed while crews fixed the guardrail near the State Route 85 onramp. Motorists trying to gain entrance were forced to find an alternative.

Farther northwest, a crash on the northbound side of the highway north of State Route 17 in Los Gatos blocked lanes before being cleared.

Powerful storms with wind and rain have taken their toll on South Bay roads.

Public works crews battled the flooding problem by moving water on Ferguson Road into a ditch near Highway 152. The road was passable, but motorists were warned to "slow down."
