For those wishing to help the family defray expenses, the GoFundMe site is receiving donations. A check of the site shortly before 11 a.m. on Saturday indicated $21,885 had been donated, about half the goal.
In one GoFundMe post, $500 was donated by a couple who indicate they lived across the street from Deputy Steely, and left this message:
Our prayers are intensely with Jake’s wife, kids, extended family, & numerous close friends. What an unbelievably horrible tragedy and loss of an incredibly influential man! Jake was a gigantic force of positive energy in our community. We lived across the street from him & his family for over a decade. Couldn’t have asked for better neighbors & friends. Jake will be greatly missed!
