How 1-Ton Bob The Steer Was Rescued From A Rain-Soaked Ravine: Watch

Firefighters turned a rain-soaked emergency into a 1-ton good deed, highlighting Sonoma County's specialized know-how and partnerships.

SONOMA COUNTY, CA — Local firefighters found themselves during the recent rains facing an unusual rescue: hoisting a 1-ton steer named Bob out of a ravine.

Bob, a 2,000-pound, 15-year-old Holstein steer, had been stuck for hours while his owners tried to free him.

About three hours later, crews from Graton Fire and Northern Sonoma County Fire, working alongside Bob’s family, developed a plan to safely extract him.

Bob's rescuers thanked the Halter Project, a Glen Ellen organization founded to assist with large animal rescues, from horses to Nigerian dwarf goat babies — and now Bob.

With the project’s help, the county has two large animal rescue teams — one led by the Graton Fire District and another by the Sonoma Valley Fire District.
