Here are the top 3 stories today in Healdsburg:
- At the big Healdsburg City Council meeting earlier this week, along with the swearing-in of our new councilmembers, everyone said goodbye to a long-serving city leader: the inimitable Jerry Eddinger, local construction boss. The Healdsburg Tribune has the story: "Jerry Eddinger, who has been in city public service since 1976, stepped down from his most recent post as a planning commissioner to end a 48-year term of service for the City of Healdsburg. During that period, he has served on the city council three times, as well as the Design Review Council, the Green City Committee, the Central Healdsburg Avenue Committee and, most recently, the Planning Commission, from which he stepped down last month. Though he appeared taken aback by the positive warmth shown by Councilmember Evelyn Mitchel and other council members and the rousing ovation he received — the council chambers were full to bursting with the 'Friends of Jerry' who have worked with him in his contracting business. Eddinger evidently did not have a speech prepared, and his remarks were brief. He later told the Tribune that, 'Had I thought about what to say, it would have been thank you to my family and friends for helping all these years to make Healdsburg the place where we want to be.'" And to be clear — Eddinger also tells the Trib that he is not, by any means, retiring from his "job as a general contractor for over 50 years" at Eddinger Enterprises. (Healdsburg Tribune)
- The Healdsburg Farmers Market will not be holding its regular market this Saturday, thanks to a foreboding weather forecast. "Although our usual policy is 'open rain or shine' we have decided to close this Saturday, December 10th," market organizers say. "The forecast is for heavy rain and gusty wind: which unfortunately is causing causing dozens of vendors to cancel, and likely would keep many of you at home." They add, however, that they "do plan to be open for our last week of our season, next Saturday December 17th. Please put it on your calendar and come find us then! Get all your favorite essentials and treats before we're gone!" (Healdsburg Farmers' Market via Facebook)
- City staffers are finally rolling up their sleeves to start putting their new "Climate Mobilization Strategy" into action. They approved the strategy back in October. It seeks to "implement projects, programs and operations that contribute to [greenhouse gas] reduction," according to the Healdsburg Tribune. There will be a kickoff meeting and town hall this coming Monday at the Healdsburg Community Center, including "a project overview and an interactive feedback session for participants. ... Snacks and childcare will be provided, and Spanish interpretation will also be available." Andrew Sturmfels, the assistant city manager overseeing the project, tells the Trib: “We’ll also soon be launching a community survey to gather ideas from community members. Post-kickoff, we’ll be working with community groups, and conducting additional public outreach (meetings, surveys, etc.) to gain feedback throughout the process. The final plan will be presented to council for feedback and eventual adoption." He's says he's hoping the city will adopt the plan by early next summer. There's also a group of local activists called Healdsburg Climate Action planning a bunch of environment-related stuff for next year. Click through for more info on how to get involved. From my notebook:
- Erin Rothfuss, a big supporter of our local Alexander Valley Film Society (now known as AVFilm), has passed away. "She and her husband, Brian, attended, contributed, and rallied around AVFilm since 2015," org leaders say. "Erin will be deeply missed by all of us." (AVFilm via Facebook)

- The list I ran yesterday from the Healdsburg Tribune of high school athletes honored by the league for the fall season was missing someone! Here's an update from the Trib: "Theresa Helfrick was named Co-Player of the Year in girls volleyball, capping her senior season with a significant honor. 'She was the heartbeat of the team and the captain of the ship,' said Coach Richard Mitts. 'Both on and off the court, girls looked to her for strength and assistance… (the) type of player that can pick up a trick or technique after being taught it once and then can go on to teach the other teammates immediately after. Genuinely can’t say enough great things about her.'" (Healdsburg Tribune)
