Here are the top 3 stories today in Healdsburg:

  1. Wondering what's going on with the cannabis shop debate here in Healdsburg? Mayor Ariel Kelley just published a helpful update on the current situation. "Several years ago when cannabis was officially legalized across the state, Healdsburg chose to wait and see before allowing for retail dispensaries or other cannabis related businesses such as manufacturing, within the city limits," she says. "Last year, the council decided to embark on this journey to allow cannabis businesses within Healdsburg — with strict limitations and guidance from state standards and best practices. ... And most recently last month, the City Council voted to award a consulting contract to provide the City with technical support for the [request for proposal, or RFP] process." Healdsburg city officials are thinking to allow up to two weed dispensaries and one delivery service to open in town. But before that can happen, over the next few months, officials reportedly have to grapple with zoning stuff — aka, where exactly in Healdsburg these shops should be allowed to open — as well as some tax and fee stuff. Then around May, they hope to be far enough along to start accepting requests from dispensaries that wanna open here. Have opinions in the meantime? "Reach out or attend one of our public hearings to make your voice heard!" the mayor says. "Feel free to reach out to me with any questions, ideas, or concerns at akelley@healdsburg.gov or 707-385-1282." (Ariel Kelley via Facebook & Ariel Kelley via MailChimp & Nextdoor)
  2. Can I get a haaaallelujah — the Healdsburg Tribune is running police logs again! Here are some of the reports that made the Trib for the period of Jan. 30 through Feb. 7: A woman who believed she was drugged at Duke's Spirited Cocktails, saying "she set her drink on the bar, unattended, to go to the restroom" and "when she and friends returned to their hotel in Hopland, she asked for help because she felt she could not move her body, stated she had never felt this way before and felt that she had been drugged"; another Duke's patron who, upon getting kicked out of the bar, claimed four security guards pushed and choked him to the point that he wants to "press charges"; three guys who "stumbled out of John and Zeke’s and started throwing the garbage cans out front"; a woman reported for "trespassing" because she was sleeping on one of the benches outside Black Oak Coffee; a man found "lying with his legs in the roadway" near St Paul’s Church, who police say turned out to have multiple warrants out for his arrest; a "grand theft" reported at Lola’s Market after two men in ski masks allegedly "came into the store and stole approximately $1,500 worth of product," then fled in a white van; a hit-and-run fender-bender outside the Elephant in the Room; and more. Oh and BTW: It's been a couple of months since I gave you any police log highlights here in the newsletter, but you can always check out the "Bulletin" section of the Healdsburg Police Department website to see all the logs verbatim. (Healdsburg Tribune & Healdsburg Police Department)
  3. Sonoma County resident Vera Korkus, a Holocaust survivor who used to speak to Healdsburg students about her time in the Nazi concentration camps in the 1940s, has died at age 94. From the Press Democrat story on her death: “An Austrian Jew born in Vienna in 1928, Korkus was sent to a concentration camp at age 14 and persevered, as many of the adults and children around her perished from slave labor or the gas chambers. 'I felt strongly that I must survive, if for no other reason than spite. I am not going to let them kill me,' she said in a measured tone to a transfixed audience of about 60 Healdsburg Junior High students in 2010. ... Korkus told the students how she escaped from a death march from Auschwitz, in Nazi-occupied Poland, to the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in northern Germany in early 1945 as Soviet forces were closing in on the Nazis. Those who couldn't walk were shot, while Korkus made a harrowing escape and eventually found her way back to Vienna, where she was reunited with her sister. 'It was amazing,' [HJH] eighth-grader Jose Delgado said. 'She just kept going, even though her family was dying.'" ... In closing, she offered the Healdsburg students a bit of advice. 'If you feel sorry for yourself, you can't act, you are paralyzed. It's the worst thing you can do in your life.'"(Press Democrat; paywall)

Healdsburg pics of the day:

A local photographer, painter and writer who goes by Tenay32 took the above photos out Westside Road a couple of weekends ago. "I was busy working but found a quick hour to grab a sunset and a mustard stroll with my adventure cat (with the owner’s permission of course)," she says. And Grace Gau Saunders took this one at the Pine Flat Road bridge over Sausal Creek out in Alexander Valley, "right across from Hafner Vineyard’s property," during the recent warm weather. "Beautiful tree in bloom and water in the creek!" she says. (Photo courtesy of Grace Gau Saunders)
