Here are the top 3 stories today in Healdsburg:
- Secret's out! The Shop Local Healdsburg blog and social media account just discovered the hidden used bookstore next door to Mr. Moon's on the plaza. "Up a flight of 28 steps flanked by a book each step of the way, is a hidden used bookstore named 'Library of Shipwrecked Books' occupied by prolific, self-taught artist Robert (Bob) Johnson," Shop Local writes in an Instagram post with accompanying video footage. Bob was reportedly a Los Angeles Times cartoonist in the 1980s, "turned cartographer, designer, and wine label illustrator." More from the post: "He said he doesn't have a website or is on social media and wanted people to discover his bookstore on their own. But that changed last Saturday afternoon when Bob began to open up. Bob moved into this space two years ago, where he displays his collection of used books, art, and wine labels he's worked on from local wineries ... . Hardcover books are priced $40 and paperbacks $20. There are also some vintage and limited edition books that Bob's collected that he can tell you about. It's worth stopping by here and getting lost in this cozy library, if you don't mind exploring a bit and hearing a local gem of a personality guiding you through his love for books, art, and cartoons." You can visit Bob's hidden bookstore yourself at 314 Center Street, Suite 223. (Shop Local Healdsburg via Instagram)
- A motorcyclist died in a crash out near Lake Sonoma on Sunday, according to the Press Democrat. The man's name has not been released yet. Here are the details that California Highway Patrol spokesman David deRutte gave the PD: "The man was riding a Harley-Davidson Dyna Super Glide west on Rockpile Road when he lost control of the motorcycle, driving straight as the road curved and crashing into a guardrail, deRutte said. The man, who was wearing a helmet, was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities are waiting to notify next of kin before identifying him. The crash occurred sometime between 9:30 a.m. and about 1 p.m., according to preliminary CHP findings. Due to the condition of his body, authorities believe the man crashed about two to three hours before the incident was reported. ... Because the road where the crash occurred is 'desolate' and it would have been easy to see from the roadway, deRutte said it is possible there were few to no drivers taking the road between when the man crashed and when it was reported to authorities. 'We do think he might have been out there a couple hours by himself,' deRutte said." (Press Democrat; paywall)

From my notebook:
- Giving Tuesday might be over, but in case you're in the Giving Wednesday spirit, here are a couple of artsy Healdsburg causes I forgot to mention in yesterday's issue: The Healdsburg Jazz music org, which runs our local jazz festival and other programs, and the AVFilm film org, which hosts movie screenings and classes — and, as you may know, is trying to open a theater in downtown Healdsburg. Consider donating! (Healdsburg Jazz via Facebook & AVFilm via Facebook)
- Also: As part of their donation campaign, Healdsburg nonprofit Russian Riverkeeper created a super interesting video about all the work they're doing to restore local river-bank habitats ruined by gravel miners. (Russian Riverkeeper via Facebook & Facebook Groups & Vimeo)
- The Press Democrat's editorial board continues to hound the Healdsburg Police Department this week about their public records request form, arguing it should not ask applicants whether they plan to file a lawsuit based on the request. "For people charged with enforcing the law, the Healdsburg police seem surprisingly hazy on one part of the state code — the California Public Records Act," the board writes. "A reminder for them: People are entitled to public records regardless of what they plan to do with them." (Press Democrat; paywall)
- Corazón Healdsburg plans to hand out traditional "Aguinaldo" Christmas goodie bags full of candy and treats at the big tree-lighting event in the plaza on Friday. And there will be live music by RocÃo La Dama de La Cumbia y Su Sonora. (Corazón Healdsburg via Facebook & Healdsburg Community Services via Facebook)
- FYI, a beautiful young "Belgian Shepherd / Malinois" mix and three new Guinea pigs just went up for adoption at the Healdsburg animal shelter. (Healdsburg Patch)
