Here are the top 4 stories today in Healdsburg:

  1. Latest on the super tight race for the two-year Healdsburg City Council seat left empty by departed councilmember Skylaer Palacios! The Sonoma County government's live election results website is showing that candidate Ron Edwards is still (barely) in the lead over former mayor Brigette Mansell. Ron has gotten about 45.8 percent of the vote and Brigette around 44.4 percent — a difference of some 33 votes only. The county's website says 100 percent of the ballots have been counted. However, for what it's worth, I haven't seen any news outlets or candidates officially calling the race just yet — so I'll refrain for now! But yeah, that's where things appear to stand. And in case you missed it, the other two open council seats on the ballot — both four-year terms — had clear winners Wednesday morning in incumbent Evelyn Mitchell and Parks & Rec commissioner Chris Herrod. Both of Healdbsurg's local tax-related measures on the ballot passed, too. You can track live election results here. (Sonoma County Government)
  2. A high-speed car chase through Healdsburg in the wee hours Wednesday morning ended in a dramatic crash and arrest, according to the Press Democrat. Police say Sara Fuller, 26-year-old woman from Eureka, took off in a stolen Subaru Outback after they tried to pull her over near the intersection of Healdsburg Avenue and Dry Creek Road. She then drove two blocks and screeched onto the 101 south, cops say. From the PD story: "As police pursued, the Subaru wove in lanes, passed other vehicles and traveled at speeds reaching 130 mph, [Healdsburg police Sgt. Nick Castaneda] said. After about 15 minutes, the Subaru took the College Avenue offramp in Santa Rosa and crashed into a box next to a traffic pole, Castaneda said. The driver exited the vehicle and ran away up a highway embankment, police said. She then crossed six lanes of ongoing traffic but was not hit by a vehicle. Fuller made her way to a Shell gas station where police arrested her at 3:10 a.m." Read the full story for more on Sara's alleged criminal history and new charges stemming from the chase. (Press Democrat; paywall)
  3. Healdsburg High School's beloved baseball coach, Mark Domenichelli, just got some big national and state honors for his work last school year. He has been named "2021-2022 California North Coast Section Coach of the year" by the coaches division of the National Federation of State High School Associations, according to Healdsburg High officials. "Thanks for all you do for our kids," they say. "Well deserved." They posted a copy of the award on social media, which says it's in "appreciation and recognition" of his "dedication to furthering interscholastic athletics within California." Mark previously coached HHS baseball for 12 years, up until 2011 — then returned in 2019 to step back in the role. His team came in first in the league that year, and has placed second in the two seasons since. Their next season starts in March. 4. Healdsburg's Tourism Improvement District just announced which local orgs will get $125,000 in grants to fund events they want to throw from November 2022 through April 2023. They hand out the grants based on which "arts, cultural and educational activities" they think will best "promote room stays" at the 31 " luxury hotels, motels, modern lofts and suites, cozy bed & breakfasts and rustic inns" that pay to be members of the district. These are some of the winners: The Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving; the "Merry Healdsburg Weekend" from Dec. 2-4 that "transforms the Healdsburg Plaza into a winter wonderland with a tree lighting, carriage rides, a holiday concert, photos with Santa and more"; the Healdsburg Jazz Festival's "Winter Concert Series," which includes "free live music at various locations in town including a holiday swing dance party with Lavay Smith & The Red Hot Skillet Lickers at Paul Mahder Gallery"; the "Art After Dark" street fair; the Fitch Mountain Footrace; and a brand-new event called the "Healdsburg Prune Box Derby" that will be "inviting the community to build imaginative, non-motored, box cars to ride down a hill in town on Derby Day in spring of 2023." Some cool stuff to look forward to, for sure... (Healdsburg Patch)

From my notebook:

  • In the spirit of the Veterans Day holiday, the Press Democrat has an interesting piece on the "network of folks in Sonoma County, many of them veterans, who make sure rules are followed to dispose of" old, tattered American flags — including U.S. Air Force veteran Tim Madura, who currently serves as commander of the American Legion Post 111 in Healdsburg. “We get questions all the time, ‘What do I do with my flag?’” he says. “Give it to me. People need to know they can contact the American Legion.” (Press Democrat; paywall)
