Lake County Procession Honors Deputy Who Died: Images
A procession of police vehicles on Sunday honored Lake County Deputy Jake Steely, who died Thursday after a Mendocino ocean accident.
LAKE COUNTY - A procession on Sunday through Lake County gave well-wishers a chance to pay their last respects to a local deputy who died Thursday after an apparent tragic accident earlier in the week off the Mendocino coastline.
Deputy Sheriff Jake Steely was apparently swept into the ocean with his 11-year-old son while visiting the Mendocino Coast on Monday. On Thursday, doctors in Chico determined that Steely had suffered irreversible brain damage and pronounced him brain dead.
On Sunday, as the Sheriff's Office returned Steely to Lake County, residents scattered to honor the deputy along a route that began at the intersection of Highway 20 and Highway 53 in Clearlake Oaks and ended at Chapel of the Lakes Mortuary on North High St. in Lakeport.
