Here are the top 3 stories in Healdsburg today:

  1. Did you know an antique shop called "The Stand" opened earlier this summer inside Healdsburg's tiny old taxi stand, in that little shopping area at North and Center streets across from the Raven? According to the Press Democrat, it's the "brainchild of Kelly Dorrance, co-owner of BloodRoot Wines, with which the tiny shop shares a parking lot." She reportedly designed the tasting rooms at BloodRoot and Reeve Wines herself, and now sees her latest project as "an outpost of authenticity." She tells the paper: "The way Healdsburg has gotten so high-brow, I’m craving spaces where you see the soul of the person who has created the space. I want [The Stand] to feel like you’re walking down a dusty alley in Mexico, and you’ve peered through someone’s open garage door. I want it to be magical, quirky, and unpredictable. I want it to be like my living room. I want it to feel like a window into my soul. I want it to bring people surprise and joy." At any given time, The Stand is selling around 50 or 60 found items at its 300-square-foot location, the PD reports — and "prices generally range from $35 to $1,200, depending on the item." It opens at noon on weekends and 1 p.m. on weekdays, and closes each day at 7 p.m. (The Stand at BloodRoot via Instagram & Press Democrat; paywall)
  2. After getting dissed and dismissed by a San Francisco Chronicle food critic last month, Healdsburg vegan restaurant Little Saint bounces back with a glowing review in the New York Times this week. The Times has named our new food, art and event space on North Street one of its 50 favorite restaurants in the annual list for 2022. "It may seem like a cheat to open a plant-based restaurant in the Sonoma Valley’s cradle of organic abundance," the paper writes. "But it would almost be a shame not to open one, if you had not only a 24-acre farm nearby but also the cooking brain trust of Single Thread, Little Saint’s sibling restaurant with three Michelin stars. The food here, like the space, is bright and inviting. Chilled strawberry borscht levels up with a spike of curry and coconut yogurt. The smashed cucumbers with XO sauce and crispy rice lightly scorch and then refresh. And the crust on a chocolate tart will make you wonder why anyone uses anything but coconut cream as shortening. Most important, the preparations revel in the produce, rather than just ratcheting up the umami in a quest to conjure animal flavors." (Little Saint via Instagram & New York Times)
  3. Petaluma police say a 26-year-old Healdsburg man took them on a dangerous car chase through town on Sunday night. It all started when officers responded to a reported hit-and-run crash on East Washington Street in Petaluma, near the southbound 101 offramp, according to police. Here's what allegedly happened next: "Officers were at the scene within minutes and saw the suspect's car drive by so they immediately followed the car along surface streets. As they tried to catch up with the car, the driver, who was later identified as Cupertino Giron, drove erratically and reached 65 miles per hour as he ran several stop signs, [Petaluma police Sgt. Chris Ricci] said. Officers initiated a pursuit that lasted for several blocks before Giron yielded to officers at East Washington and Edith street. A high-risk stop was performed and Giron and his passenger were taken into custody without incident, the sergeant said. After the pursuit, officers learned that Giron’s passenger had requested to be let out of the vehicle on several occasions and Giron refused, Ricci said. 'Giron displayed objective signs of intoxication and was determined to be driving under the influence of alcohol,' Ricci said." He has since been jailed "on suspicion of felony evading, felony violation of probation, driving under the influence, driving on a suspended license, and false imprisonment." (Petaluma Patch)

And another local winery, Reeve Wines, posted this pic of one of their employees "with a mountain of Falanghina in that bin" during this year's harvest. "Big love for the people who come out and pick the fruit during harvest," the winery writes. "It's fast and furious, and sometimes very hot. Always amazed and always so grateful."
