Here are the top 3 stories today in Healdsburg:
- The man who killed 77-year-old Healdsburg resident Stephen Cotler and his 37-year-old daughter Ariana and her husband in a DUI crash down in Utah last year has been sentenced to "four terms of up to five years" each in state prison for the crime, according to the Standard-Examiner. Here's what happened, according to the newspaper: "Myron M. Barlow was driving a pickup truck that crashed into a car that was slowing after a truck ahead lost its load on June 29, 2021, according to the Utah Highway Patrol. ... The Davis County Attorney’s Office charged Barlow with two counts of third-degree felony negligent automobile homicide. Prosecutors added a third homicide charge in April of this year after another occupant of the car, David Patrick Langley, 44, Ariana Cotler’s husband, died at a rehabilitation center. ... The court heard from relatives of the crash victims and the judge received several letters of support from Barlow’s relatives. According to charging documents, a catering truck lost a load of canvas bags on southbound I-15 and several cars slowed. The Cotlers were killed when Barlow’s truck hit their vehicle. The Highway Patrol said Barlow was given a breath alcohol test, which registered at 0.146%. The Utah limit is 0.05%." Read the full story here. (Standard-Examiner)
- The homeless shelter being built in the old L&M Motel building at 70 Healdsburg Avenue at the south end of town is set to open this coming Monday, Nov. 21, according to city officials. "Work on the L&M Village continues with our project partners Reach for Home, Burbank Housing and DMR Builders in advance of the... opening date," officials announced a couple of Fridays ago. They said "the scope of work includes creating ADA accessible rooms, installation of fire altering and fire suppression systems, installing sidewalks and repaving the parking lot, among many other improvements" — and that "at the end of construction, there will be 22 new transitional housing units to serve those experiencing homelessness in our community." You can find more info on the project on the city's website, or reach out to Stephen Sotomayor — the city’s housing director — directly at ssotmayor@healdsburg.gov, with any questions. - A handful of new businesses have opened in downtown Healdsburg this month. All of them appear to be relatively fancy-looking shops full of home goods, clothing and accessories. The first is Falling for Dainty, a jewelry store at 240 Center St. across from El Sombrero. "Prices range from $40 - $70, and most of their pieces are gold-filled (waterproof, hypoallergenic, and tarnish resistant)," say the good people behind the Shop Local Healdsburg social media account, who stopped by and shot some video. Another business to open recently is the Adelle boutique at 119 Plaza St., right next to the also-pretty-new Gina's Boutique. "Adelle once had her boutique next to [Healdsburg Bar and Grill] in 2011, then later relocated in Petaluma and Santa Rosa’s Montgomery Village," says Shop Local Healdsburg. "Now back in Healdsburg, you’ll find jewelry, ceramics, colorful and timeless hues of glassware (including vintage pieces), leather goods, and cozy fillers." And lastly, there's a new home and furniture store called Maison Smith at 459 Healdsburg Ave., across from the Modern Antiquarium. According to Shop Local, it was "founded by luxury and hospitality interior designer Janen Korth, and her husband, Buzz," who run their flagship store (of the same name) in Santa Fe, New Mexico. "Maison Healdsburg’s store extends the same aesthetic as their Santa Fe shop," Shop Local says, "offering 'a unique array of bespoke pieces, 17-19th century furnishings, vintage textiles, Belgian linens, signature scents, hand-thrown table top, eclectic objets-d’art, and so much more.'" Healdsburg Patch reader Paul Garza sent me a pic, below, of Maison's new storefront. He also noticed a construction fence around the old Bear Republic location a few blocks south. Perhaps foreshadowing another new local business to come...? (Inbox & Facebook Groups & Shop Local Healdsburg & Shop Local Healdsburg & Shop Local Healdsburg)
