- A group of more than 60 Healdsburg neighbors have come forward with concerns about new plans from Vertice, the hospitality group behind the SingleThread restaurant, to turn the Raven Film Center and another big office building on North Street into "complimentary hospitality experiences" for SingleThread that would open two or three years from now. The neighbors sent a letter to Vertice earlier this week, urging developers to share their specific vision with the community as soon as possible. "We want to understand the potential uses for your purchase of 150 North Street and the 25 year lease of the Raven Film Center site," they write. More from the letter: "There is legitimate concern regarding Vertice's marketing audience: ultra-luxury restaurant Single Thread advertises for dinners beginning at $425. Though Single Thread restaurant is acclaimed nationally for its vision and delivery, its extremely high price points discourage middle class residents from participation. Will the hospitality concepts for these two new locations continue to market exclusivity and high-end pricing that is unaffordable to local residents and foster more hospitality imbalance in Healdsburg?" One of the signers, Bruce Abramson, tells me over email that neighbors are seeking a "balance between resident and visitor needs in the downtown commercial district." He adds: "This is not a petition gathering exercise. I and others believe that 1000’s of other residents share our sentiments over high end hospitality and housing as well." And in response, the SingleThread team tells the Press Democrat that they will "share potential concepts with the community when they’re ready and plan to meet with surrounding property owners and 'other interested parties' for thoughts and feedback." They say their intention is to "move through the planning process thoughtfully and deliberately and attempt to strike an appropriate balance.” You can read more in the PD. The Raven Film Center building at 415 Center St. (Image via Google Maps) - Healdsburg resident and wine industry "titan" Ed Pascoe died a few weeks ago at age 75, according to an obituary just released by his family. Along with his wife Barbara, Ed reportedly owned and operated Barbed Oak Vineyard down in the Bennett Valley near Sonoma for many years — whose grapes went to other wineries and also their own wines — and invested in dozens of restaurants across California. From his obit: "Ed was a gifted businessman, a titan of his industry, and had a strong work ethic. His success allowed him to do what he wanted to do; live, laugh, and love. He produced award winning wine, invested in and mentored those around him, and supported his family. He was an avid reader, a sports enthusiast, loved spending time in his garden, enjoyed drinking wine and eating amazing food with good company of course, as that is what made it better." A service was held for Ed at the Healdsburg cemetery earlier this month. In a comment on his obituary, a friend named Becky Steere writes: "Ed was one of a kind. He was larger than life, smart, funny, kind and a heck of a businessman. He made sure that all of his friends were having a good time in life. ... We will never forget you big giving heart and smile. ❤" (Legacy.com & The BVI Beacon)
