Here are the top 3 stories in Healdsburg today:
- Locals have been creating some pretty awesome entries so far for this year's Healdsburg Scarecrow Festival. And they're now being auctioned off online, so you can have one for your very own — with proceeds going to local homelessness nonprofit Reach for Home. Standout entries, priced from $30 up to $150, include the mysterious Calavera, a "Giants fan" in a white robe and a floppy sun hat; a totally tricked-out firefighter; a pirate- or soldier-looking woman from the olden days named "Ghostly Gwendolyn"; an abstract figure wrapped in colorful cloth by local kids at the Healdsburg Center for the Arts; a "Mother Earth" character decked out in flowers; and Roz, a feisty old lady created by the staff of the Healdsburg Museum. (You can watch an amusing video of Roz's creation on the museum's Facebook page.) Local artist and Healdsburg High teacher Linus Lancaster, who runs the festival, says there are "many more" scarecrows on the way, "so please keep checking back" for them to appear on the auction website. He also says "we are still accepting late submissions through the weekend of the 22nd so please consider jumping in" with your own entry. You can contact Linus directly at llancaster@husd.com for "supplies and technical help." (Inbox & Healdsburg Scarecrow Festival & Healdsburg Museum via Facebook)
- The Healdsburg High School girls volleyball team continues to look amazing this season. Their win record is currently 14-8 — a far cry from their losing 4-14 record of 2021. They're second in the league right now, just behind Rancho Cotate, who beat them at a disappointing home game earlier this week. "Rancho Cotate is a Division III team, which means the school is slightly larger than the Division IV Healdsburg," the Healdsburg Tribune reports. "Bigger schools have the inherent advantage of a larger student body to fill out the roster, but leagues like the North Bay Redwood mix school sizes based on location, in this case west Sonoma County." Even so — at the Hounds' previous home game last week against Ukiah, an even bigger Division II school, they did emerge victorious. The game was a real "battle," according to the Ukiah Daily Journal. "In the end, fans were treated to an exciting match, full of rallies and comebacks," the Journal reported. "The players were exhilarated by super competition and plenty of tense action. Coaches on both sides white-knuckled their clipboards the entire night, rightly feeling that their team had plenty of opportunities to land knock out punches, yet conversely impressed by their girls’ resilience to continue to compete, even when they were down." Healdsburg will play the same school again this coming Tuesday, Oct. 18 — this time on Ukiah's home turf. "Should be a great one to watch!" says the Journal. And the Trib reports that this game "could ultimately decide the league title." (Healdsburg Tribune & MaxPreps & Ukiah Daily Journal; paywall)
- Have you spotted the new, wine country-themed Frida Kahlo mural in Healdsburg yet? It's painted onto the side of a small apartment building at 970 Healdsburg Ave., across from the Silveira dealership. And the Tribune just reported that it also has a sister mural, tucked a little farther back into the apartment complex. "The mural facing Healdsburg Avenue is a larger-than-life portrait of [Frida] as a wine muse — her signature hat is made of purple wine grapes instead of her usual bright flowers," according to the Tribune. "Farther back on the property, Kahlo is having a glass of wine in her Mexico City kitchen, but here she’s represented as a skeleton, in celebration of Dia de los Muertos. Muralist JM Knudsen of Sacramento refers to this one as Muerto Frida." This second mural is "on private property and is best seen on a walk past the property, just north of the 7-Eleven shop at the corner of Healdsburg and Powell," the Tribune says. The owner of the property, Rob Wolf, says he commissioned the paintings "to add some color to the residences" and "contribute something interesting to the city and community of Healdsburg." And the artist, Knudsen, says of the concept he came up with: "The grapes are the connector to the entire world there. And the people there at 970 Healdsburg have pride in Frida and have pride in the grapes that provided them with life there and the opportunity of prosperity in America through hard work."
