Air over Healdsburg:

Here are the top 3 stories today in Healdsburg:
- Sonic, the newest internet provider in town, continues to set up infrastructure around Healdsburg. City officials say this "utility work being conducted by Sonic" includes "the installation of above-ground non-wireless telecommunications infrastructure on the existing utility pole lines that are being worked on around Healdsburg" — but that "this will not impact current services" or "traffic in your area." They say Sonic's construction hours are Monday to Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., "in accordance with City ordinances." Anyone with questions can call Sonic rep Hank Schlotman at (707) 522-1000. (City of Healdsburg via Facebook)
- A young man from Healdsburg was arrested at a bike shop down in Palo Alto last Friday afternoon after he allegedly "threatened a worker at Cardinal Bike Shop and walked out with cash" from the business. Michael Lindstrom-Spence, 23, was detained by local cops just as he was "about to drive away in his vehicle," a gray Lexus, according to police. Here are some more details from the Palo Alto Police Department report: "The investigation revealed that the suspect had entered the business wanting to sell a used electric bicycle. When staff refused to buy it, the suspect reached into his backpack, feigned as though he had a weapon in it, made verbal threats of violence, and demanded cash from the employee (a male in his forties). Fearing for his life, the employee gave the suspect cash from the register. The suspect left the store, leaving the bicycle behind." Police say they never found any weapons, but did book Michael into Santa Clara County jail for "robbery and criminal threats (both felonies)." (City of Palo Alto)
- Also last Friday, there was an emotional vigil in downtown Santa Rosa for the Lake County man killed by Sonoma County Sheriff's deputies a couple weeks ago in Healdsburg's rural Chalk Hill area. Deputies say they shot David Pelaez-Chavez because he threatened them with "a hammer, a garden tool similar to a pickax" and a large rock. His vigil was attended by around 80 people — including friends and some family members — and was "filled with prayers and calls for greater transparency over the moments that led up to his death," according to the Press Democrat. More from the PD story: "North Bay Organizing Project, a nonprofit that advocates for social, economic, racial and environmental justice, hosted the event. The group gathered around a small altar set up at the southern corner of the square, where a poster bearing a photo of Pelaez-Chavez was surrounded by candles and flowers. Speaking at a microphone in front of the altar, local faith leaders led the group through prayers, and community members and Pelaez-Chavez’s relatives vowed they would seek the truth. 'We want them to tell us the truth,' Jose Pelaez, one of the four siblings that attended Friday’s vigil, said regarding law enforcement’s account of what led to Pelaez-Chavez’s death." Another vigil attendee, Healdsburg resident Rocio Gonzalez, 45, "said she’s known the Pelaez family for more than 20 years," the PD reports. "She knew the family to be hardworking people, and described Pelaez-Chavez as a relaxed and respectful person. 'I was surprised,' Gonzalez said. 'We didn’t believe the version given to us by the (sheriff’s office) because he’s not like that.'" (Press Democrat; paywall)

From my notebook:
- You have to make more than $40 per hour to afford rent on the average two-bedroom in Healdsburg, according to a new study in the PD. The study used "fair market rent" estimates that federal officials provided for the 95448 ZIP code, then used them to "determine how much workers need to earn per hour to pay for rent without spending more than 30% of their total income." (Press Democrat; paywall)
- The people of Healdsburg have many opinions about the 4-story building proposed for the old, blighted lot at 444 Healdsburg Ave. It would include "1,200 square feet of commercial space on the ground floor and two residential units, and one accessory dwelling on the upper floors," as well as six parking spots, according to the city. If you, too, have opinions, there's a public workshop for the project tonight at 6 p.m. at City Hall. (City of Healdsburg & Facebook Groups & Facebook Groups)
- And there's another hot local topic on the agenda for tomorrow's Parks & Recs meeting: "recycled water for municipal irrigation." (City of Healdsburg & Healdsburg Water Wise via Facebook)
- The Healdsburg Chorus is set to begin rehearsals on August 22, as they gear up for "holiday concerts in early December under the leadership of Music Director David Martin." And they're looking to add some new voices this season! The chorus is "comprised of community, non-professional singers, and welcomes new members for the fall season," a rep says. "Rehearsals are every Monday night from 6:30 to 8:30p. The chorus doesn’t hold auditions, but new members will sing for the director after the second rehearsal to make sure they are in the correct section and can sing together with others." Click through to find out more. (Inbox & Healdsburg Chorus)
- Four fur babies — two stray puppies and two stray kittens — were recently found roaming the streets of Healdsburg. They're now being kept safe at the animal shelter. Anyone recognize them? (Humane Society via Facebook & Humane Society via Facebook & Humane Society via Facebook)
- The Corazón Healdsburg office is closed again today. But "the phone lines will still be open 10am-5pm," the org says. (Corazón Healdsburg via Facebook)
Thanks for following along. Stay tuned for more tomorrow!
