Sonoma County Chef Couple Team Named James Beard Award Semifinalists

A Healdsburg couple was among 20 semifinalists announced for the Best Chef: California category.

HEALDSBURG, CA — A couple who together serve as the chefs of a Healdsburg restaurant were among semifinalists announced Wednesday for the prestigious 2023 James Beard Awards, sometimes referred to as the Oscars of the culinary arts industry.

Named for the late chef, cookbook author and food presenter James Beard, the awards “recognize exceptional talent in the culinary and food media industries, as well as a demonstrated commitment to racial and gender equity, community, sustainability, and a culture where all can thrive,” the James Beard Foundation said Wednesday in a news release.

The semifinalists are recognized across 23 categories, including a new award for outstanding bakery.

Here in Healdsburg, Kyle and Katina Connaughton of SingleThread were named among 20 semifinalists for the category of Best Chef: California.

The "Best Chef" award recognizes chefs who set high standards in their culinary skills and leadership abilities, and who are making efforts to help create a sustainable work culture in their respective regions while contributing positively to their broader community.

SingleThread Farm-Restaurant-Inn, 131 North St. in Healdsburg, is a 3 Michelin-starred restaurant that serves with five guest rooms. Guests of the restaurant are treated to an 11-course tasting menu, showcasing the seasonal bounty from the couple’s farm.
