Here are the top 3 stories in Healdsburg today:
- Quick storm update! The crazy winds this week in Healdsburg have downed several trees in and around town, according to the Healdsburg Fire Department. Officials shared pics on Facebook and Instagram of firefighters clearing several trees, including one "massive one blocking the roadway" on what appeared to be a rural country road. "We are proud to serve our community," they wrote. "Stay safe out there!" Other downed trees across the rest of the county have taken down power lines, causing widespread outages, according to the Press Democrat. Wind gusts reportedly reached 57 mph yesterday "just southwest of Healdsburg." The weather forecast for the next few days shows more winds, but not quite as strong as they have been. Instead, the big storm story for the rest of the week will be freezing temps accompanied by rain and maybe even snow. From the PD: "Some weather watchers were already warning motorists headed north along Highway 101 Tuesday afternoon that Caltrans had started posting of potential snowfall alerts. ... The weather service issued a frost advisory for midnight to 9 a.m. Wednesday for the North Bay interior valleys. A freeze watch was also issued for the same areas from midnight to 9 a.m. Thursday." If you want, you can reach out to let me know how you fare during this harsh winter weather. Pics are welcome, too! - Amy Covin, owner of the Amy's Wicked Slush frozen dessert stand near Memorial Bridge, talks to the Press Democrat about her decision to sell the business she founded in May 2017. “It’s been quite a ride these last six years,” she says. “I think it’s time for new blood, new ideas and a new vision.” More from the story: "Covin had left a 25-year accounting career when she decided to start Amy’s Wicked Slush. Hailing from Boston, Covin grew up with slush and felt the need to bring it to Sonoma County. The Healdsburg location was a quick success when it opened and served up to 1,500 customers daily on a summer weekend. Her East Coast combination of soft-serve ice cream topped with a fruit-flavored slush brought the entrepreneur into the limelight of local business owners when she won Healdsburg Chamber of Commerce’s 2018 Business of the Year. The business, based in Healdsburg, has since expanded to three other locations around the North Bay: inside Santa Rosa’s Epicenter, the Sonoma Fun Center and in Novato, along with a food truck called 'Wicked on Wheels' that brings the slush to events, festivals and markets." Amy also tells the PD that "her focus for now is to find the right owner for the business and help them transition to taking it over and continuing to help it grow," and adds: “I will always feel that Wicked is the coolest thing I’ve ever done. I can see myself at 90 years old saying ‘I did the coolest thing,’ so it’ll be bittersweet and I’m sure I’ll be crying as I walk away for the last time.” The real estate broker in charge of selling Amy's is Roxanne Mercer at Luxe Places International Realty; you can check out the listing on her website. (Photo courtesy of Shop Local Healdsburg) - A new international winery collective called Alpha Omega is planning to open a tasting room in Healdsburg this spring, according to Wine Industry Advisor. "Alpha Omega winery in Napa Valley, Tolosa winery in the San Luis Obispo Coast and Perinet winery in Spain’s Priorat announced their official merger today, strengthening the three brands to formally create the Alpha Omega Collective," the industry news outlet reports. "The union coincides with Alpha Omega Collective expanding and upgrading its downtown Napa tasting room, debuting a Paso Robles location and soon-to-be-opened Healdsburg location and launching Alpha Omega Collective Cares to reinforce its sustainability pledge." The collective's Instagram page says their Healdsburg tasting room will be located at 241 Healdsburg Ave., which looks like it's right between Stephen & Walker Winery and Siduri Wine Bar & Tasting Lounge, just south of the plaza. You can also see a rough sketch of the storefront on their website. (Alpha Omega Collective & Wine Industry Advisor & Google Maps)
