Three other victims — including the six-year-old child — were rescued by bystanders, who launched their boat from Lawson’s Landing.

Tomales Bay is a long, narrow inlet of the Pacific Ocean. Temperatures averaging about 56 degrees at warmest can incapacitate a person within 60 minutes, and much faster when the air is cold — especially without cold water clothing.
