Here's the top story in Healdsburg today:

Election results have been streaming in since last night for the city, county and state contests on the ballot yesterday. Here in Healdsburg, it looks like City Council incumbent Evelyn Mitchell has secured one of two open four-year seats on the council, with Parks & Rec commission chair Chris Herrod taking the second one of those. But the race for the third council seat — a shorter, two-year term — was still too close to call as of this morning, according to the Press Democrat. At that time, newcomer Ron Edwards was barely in first place with 45.8 percent of the vote, followed closely by former mayor Brigette Mansell with 44.4 percent of the vote. So that one's still a tossup! Measure-wise, both L and M — which will give the city more flexibility in how to use local taxes — appear to be passing with flying colors. At the county level, Amie Carter is winning for the role of school superintendent. And at the state level, the Press Democrat reports that "three Democratic state lawmakers who represent parts or all of Sonoma County were reelected Tuesday night, outpacing lesser known Republican challengers in early returns that were expected to hold in a region dominated by Democrats." They include Healdsburg's own Sen. Mike McGuire and 2nd District State Assemblyman Jim Wood. You can drill down on these races and more on the county's website. From my notebook:

  • Quick correction! I accidentally wrote in yesterday's newsletter that there were two seats open on the Healdsburg City Council, instead of three. Many thanks to the reader who pointed out my mistake! Really hope it didn’t trip anybody up… (Inbox & Healdsburg Patch)
  • Speaking of our City Council candidates: Current councilmember David Hagele says a tradition created two years ago during COVID, in which the "candidates got together to raise a glass to each other & the conclusion of our campaigns… on plastic chairs in the middle of a closed Plaza Street," continued on Election Day yesterday. "I was honored to raise a glass to Susan, Evelyn, Chris, Linda, Brigette, Ron & Matias, to celebrate their campaigns & all the hard work!!!" David posted online, alongside pics of them all having drinks at Duke's. (David Hagele via Facebook)
  • And in case you missed it — the Press Democrat reported over the weekend on some local controversy around campaign contributions to a couple of Healdsburg City Council candidates. The funds came from some of the folks behind a controversial inn and prospective "private club" on Grove Street called The Ruse. Winning incumbent Evelyn Mitchell and local businesswoman Susan Graf both reportedly returned the funds after neighbors called them out in the "What's Happening Healdsburg" and "Beverly Healdsburg" Facebook groups. That's it for today. See you soooon...
