Air over Healdsburg:

Here are the top 4 stories today in Healdsburg:
- It was hard to miss the giant "Turkey Trot" 5K run/walk through town yesterday, an annual Thanksgiving tradition. The event organizer, Healdsburg Running Company, estimates nearly 3,000 people attended this year. The starting line was set up outside the company's location on Center Street near North Street; walkers and runners met there around 8 a.m., then made their way up to Powell Avenue, back down to Piper, over to the golf course area, down near Memorial Bridge, up the Foss Creek Pathway and finally back to Center and North. From today's colorful recap in the Press Democrat: "Over 2,000 participants, many in turkey hats and tutus cheered while walking or running through Healdsburg’s neighborhoods where families stood on their front lawns ringing bells as the runners passed by while kids still dressed in their pajamas peered from their windows. The 5K run/walk has been held since 2014. Proceeds go toward raising money for the 'Live Like Drew' Drew Esquivel Memorial Scholarship which helps Healdsburg-area student-athletes attend college." The event also included a costume contest at the start/finish line for the best Thanksgiving-themed outfits. You can see some pics and video footage at the following links — looks like everyone had a blast. - Right around the time the Turkey Trot was getting underway yesterday morning, a wildfire broke out around 20 miles north of Healdsburg, near the Geysers east of Cloverdale. According to the Northern Sonoma County Fire District, which protects our area, firefighters arrived around 8:30 a.m. to the vegetation fire on Pine Mountain Road. They named it the Pine Fire. "We are so [grateful] for our volunteers who came in on Thanksgiving to staff additional resources at the fire," district officials say, "along with covering the fire station for most of the day." Northern Sonoma County Fire worked with Cal Fire to get the 7-acre fire contained within about four hours. "Cal Fire Copter 104 while on the way to the fire was able to pull water from the HeloPod that was placed in the Geysers," officials said. "This rapid response from both the ground and air is why this fire was prevented from getting bigger." Our local Cal Fire division also shared a Facebook post showing crews being "fed their Thanksgiving dinner on the line while battling the fire." They say the dinner "was prepared by CAL FIRE firefighters and their families at Station 49 in Cloverdale, who were covering behind the fire." - We may not have a final winner declared for Healdsburg City Council's open two-year seat until early or mid December, according to the Healdsburg Tribune. Newcomer Ron Edwards currently leads former mayor Brigette Mansell in the race by a mere 60-vote margin. "It’s an uncomfortable déjà vu for Mansell," the Tribune reports, "who in 2014 was coming in third for two council seats when she went to bed on election night, Nov. 4. Only 10 votes separated her from Jeff Civian, and it took several days for the totals to make clear that Mansell had narrowly won the seat." This time, it's taken even longer — but Mansell appears to be acknowledging Ron as the likely winner. She said the following to the Trib earlier this week: “These latest election returns reflect Ron Edwards’ lead. While I will wait until all the votes are counted to formally concede, it looks good for Ron. My sincere hope, my intention, is to stay connected and collaborative." She also gave a hap tip to her opponent for "his hard work, his personal outreach to meet his community and his commitment ‘to be a bridge’ at this critical time of decision-making.” Next, the Tribune reports, “county elections officials must finalize their official results to the secretary of state by Dec. 8. The secretary of state will then certify the results on Dec. 16.” You can read more in the Trib about the technicalities. (Healdsburg Tribune)
- Our high school girls basketball team is killing it again this year! So far they've won their first five games of the season. And the Tribune reports that "a sixth game Tuesday night was canceled because Kelseyville said they couldn’t make it — but the Greyhounds victories have often come against larger schools, and by large margins: 55-13 over Napa, 48-29 over Petaluma and 65-16 over Lower Lake at the Nov. 12 season opener." The team did pretty great last year as well, finishing second in the league. Their coach, Steve Zichichi, tells the Trib: “I am very excited about this team as we are returning all five starters, led by our two returning 1st Team All League players, Hailey Webb and Itzel Ortiz." In fact, according to the Tribune, "Saturday’s game against Rio Lindo was briefly stopped when Ortiz scored her 1,000th career point and was presented with a specially decorated game ball." Coming up next, the girls play an away game tomorrow against Fort Bragg; a home game next Tuesday against Middletown; a challenging Dec. 3 away game against St. Joseph Notre Dame from Alameda; and of course the Redwood Empire Invitational Basketball Tournament (REIBT) at Healdsburg High. Our boys basketball team, for their part, have only played one game this season, against Rio Lindo — which they also won. Their next game is tomorrow at home against Santa Rosa High.
