SONOMA COUNTY, CA — Sept. 21 is the solar equinox, one of two days in the year when sunlight shines on the earth for an equal number of hours.

It is also being marked as Sun Day, a national day of action by celebrities and activists to advocate for clean energy alternatives to conventional power sources.

Venues in Sonoma County will be hosting events on or ahead of Sept. 21.

Events in Healdsburg, Petaluma, and Windsor range from film screenings to a tour of the floating solar panels at the City of Healdsburg Wastewater Treatment Facility, the second-largest floating solar farm in the United States, according to the city.

The Sun Day event is the collaborative effort of a coalition of grassroots organizations, clean energy experts, solar industry and worker organizations, schools, affordable housing advocates, farmers, and creative partners, according to the website.

Behind the event are celebrity-influencer-activists under-30 and over, including Jane Fonda and Bill McKibben, a long-time activist and author, and United Methodist sunday school teacher.

The Windsor Community United Methodist Church will host a Sun Day "Celebration of Solar" event with a Q&A about electric vehicles and hybrid cars, as well as "sun tea," cookies baked in a solar oven, and applesauce cooked on the clean-burning wood stove, according to Pastor Laurie Bayen.

In advance of Sun Day, Climate Action Healdsburg will provide a tour of the extensive floating solar array located at the Healdsburg wastewater treatment facility. The panel array is the second-largest floating solar farm in the United States, according to the city. Rob Scates, Healdsburg's superintendent of water and wastewater, will lead the one-hour tour. The utilities department conservation analyst, Terra Sampson, will join him.
