Endangered steelhead trout have a safe haven in a Huntington Beach classroom (ocregister.com) — Edison High School in Huntington Beach is now a designated refuge for endangered Southern California steelhead trout, housing up to 650 rescued fish in new 500-gallon tanks. The former auto shop turned Innovation Lab gives students hands-on experience in marine science and conservation while supporting state wildlife agencies during wildfires, droughts, and other disasters that threaten trout habitats.
   

2. Hours-Long Standoff Injures 1; Huntington Beach Man Arrested (patch.com) — A six-hour police standoff at a home on Edinger Avenue in Huntington Beach ended Thursday night with a 49-year-old local man in custody and another person severely injured and hospitalized. SWAT, crisis negotiators, and other HBPD units used non-lethal ammunition to enter the home, and investigators are asking residents with information to contact police or OC Crime Stoppers.

Sonora boys basketball clamps down on defense to hold off Huntington Beach (ocregister.com) — Huntington Beach High’s boys basketball team fell 70–57 to Sonora in a nonleague matchup at the Challenge for CHOC fundraiser in La Habra. The Oilers cut the lead to three in the third quarter before Sonora’s defense took over, despite two Huntington Beach players reaching double figures.
   

4. The shakedown: Trump's DOJ pressured lawyers to 'find' evidence that UCLA had illegally tolerated antisemitism (heysocal.com) — A former Huntington Beach city attorney, Michael Gates, is highlighted for his role as a Trump Justice Department appointee who helped drive aggressive civil-rights actions against the University of California system, especially UCLA. The investigation details how federal officials allegedly pressured staff to justify antisemitism cases and used funding freezes and large settlement demands, raising concerns about due process and impacts on California’s public universities.
