Imperial Beach Student Wins National Merit Scholarship

The student will receive a $2,500 scholarship based on grades, test scores, extracurriculars, an essay and more.

IMPERIAL BEACH, CA — Twenty-eight high school students in San Diego County, including a student from Imperial Beach, were named National Merit Scholars Wednesday, a prestigious designation for 2,500 students that comes with a $2,500 scholarship.

The students were chosen from a pool of more than 15,000 national finalists, according to the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

The scholars were selected by a committee of college admissions officers and high school counselors who reviewed academic records, Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test scores, contributions and leadership in school and community activities, an essay written by the finalist, and a recommendation written by a high school official.
